Established in 2017, Hapitat Architects is a Beijing-based multidisciplinary design studio founded by Li Weihan (alumnus of the Technical University of Munich's School of Architecture, Germany) and Xiao Luran (graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Australia). As an open collaborative team, the studio places ecological and social sustainability at the heart of its practice.
Guided by a design philosophy rooted in locality and openness, Hapitat Architects prioritizes the dynamic interplay between space and time, emphasizing how design actively engages with the evolving context of a site. Their work explores the enduring transformation of environments, advocating for solutions that remain sensitive to both natural and societal narratives.
By adopting an objective yet progressive approach to environmental construction, the studio bridges the relationship between nature and human communities. Their methodology focuses on incremental, context-driven interventions that foster resilience and adaptability, ensuring designs remain responsive to the ever-changing fabric of landscapes and societies.
Hapitat’s projects reflect a commitment to creating spaces that harmonize ecological integrity with cultural relevance, redefining sustainability as an active dialogue between place, people, and time.

Nestled in the narrow valley, the rural classroom follows the mountain's contours, adopting an extended, flowing form. The design treats walls and roof as a unified three-dimensional whole, creating varying mountain-like silhouettes from different perspectives. Along the mountain path, multiple entrances connect diverse spaces, seamlessly integrating with both near and distant landscapes, inviting villagers to discover and enter freely at any time.
Creativity serves as the project's core educational offering, inspiring both individual and collective growth while fostering village-based innovation. As a public initiative, it cultivates villagers' creative capacities, promotes educational equity in rural areas, and functions as a cultural tourism destination - ultimately enhancing the vibrancy of public community spaces.

Design highlights: As a book and merchandise outlet, the design concept focuses more on the customer's shopping experience and memory in the venue. The design takes the experience of wandering in a Chinese garden and substitutes it into the overall space design. This is because the Chinese literati gardens are concerned with seeing the scenery at every step and gaining a sensory experience in a leisurely manner. The focus in this design process is to allow customers to linger and wander instead of passing through. By integrating the products with the walls and using the original architectural framework to divide the space in an organic form, customers can have a different spatial experience in different product areas.

As a definition of a new community campus, this project explores more about the environment in which people can live together. In the spatial vision, the structure of a tree forms the centre of the neighbourhood and activity. The enclosed houses and outward-facing spaces, inspired by rural settlements, form a clear spatial structure. The building skin and the traditional seated tables and chairs simultaneously act as a medium of communication, evolving the community form on the site and allowing the operation of various activities to be attached to the spirit of the place.

The Ma'an Community is located in the Simaqiao Subdistrict of Jinniu District, covering an area of 0.436 square kilometers. It is home to 10,800 households and over 26,760 permanent residents, making it a typical aging-structure community. The market consists of five or six interconnected narrow streets on Ma'an North Road, where hundreds of vendors and farmers sell vegetables. Many of the vendors relocated from the former Caojiaxiang Market, with some operating in storefronts while most set up stalls along the streets. The redesigned Ma'an streets now feature vertical greenery and benches where residents can rest and socialize.

Substation Gallery, BEIJING
Occupying 600 square meters with three buildings and two courtyards, the Substation Gallery was transformed from a village substation that once served local residents. The site's unique position at the village entrance carries symbolic significance—much like the traditional big tree that historically marked rural gathering points. With its open courtyards and vernacular aesthetic, the completed gallery feels familiar rather than alien to villagers, becoming a public space organically rooted in its context. From the outset, the design strategy consciously avoided monumentality. Instead, it adopted a humble posture—a spatial manifestation of collaborative efforts between village administrators, local residents, and architects. The gallery emerged as a starting point for community interaction and a demonstration of possibilities. It represents the first step toward cultivating new local identities and potentials—not as a memorial structure, but as an open invitation for gathering, illustrating how context-sensitive architecture can gradually strengthen the relationship between people and place.

Er Dui Qiao Bus Stop
The design employs a minimalist steel-and-polycarbonate canopy structure, elevated slightly above the original bus stop footprint. Its translucent roof filters sunlight into dappled patterns reminiscent of tree shade, consciously evoking the nostalgic ambiance of a traditional village gathering spot beneath an old tree. Low wooden seating wraps around the station’s perimeter, encouraging lingering without obstructing pedestrian flow. Crucially, the open-sided design maintains sightlines for bus operations, preserving the station’s functionality while enhancing community safety through passive observation—a subtle yet effective form of "eyes on the street."
